Current & Future Research
Building on the insights gained from the Creative Media Production Bootcamp, the next phase of our research will pivot towards a critical and emerging concern: the spread of misinformation and the perpetuation of hate speech on social media through AI-generated media. This future research endeavor aims to dissect the multifaceted role of artificial intelligence in media production, especially focusing on its ability to fabricate realistic yet deceptive content, which can significantly influence public opinion and social dynamics.
Objectives
1. Investigate AI’s Role in Misinformation: Understand how AI technologies are used to create and spread misinformation, including deepfakes, synthetic audio, and text that mimic human creation almost indistinguishably.
2. Analyze AI-Generated Hate Speech: Examine the ways in which AI can be exploited to perpetuate hate speech, analyzing patterns, reach, and the potential for social harm.
3. Assessing Countermeasures: Evaluate the effectiveness of current digital literacy tools and fact-checking technologies in combating AI-generated misinformation and hate speech.
4. Develop Educational Programs: Based on findings, design educational modules that can be integrated into school curriculums to teach students about the ethical use of AI in media, critical media literacy, and the importance of verifying online information.
Significance
This research is poised to contribute significantly to the discourse on digital ethics, media literacy, and the responsible use of AI technologies. By addressing the challenges posed by AI-generated misinformation and hate speech, this study aims to provide actionable insights for policymakers, educators, and technology developers to foster a safer, more informed digital environment. The ultimate goal is to empower individuals to critically engage with media, discern the truth, and mitigate the divisive impacts of artificial intelligence on society.
